Lecture 7 - Self Efficacy Flashcards
what is self efficacy
SE refers to the belief in ones capabilities to organize and execute the course of action required to produce given attainments
- SE is a foundatin of human behaviour and is the major basis for action
who is the godfather of SE and what did he suggest
Albert Bandura suggested that unless people believe that they can produce the desired result, there is very little incentive to act
- this SE influences exercise behaviour
expectations of failure can effect _______
- choice of activity
- amount of energy invested
- perseverance
relate SE back to expectations of failure
- expectations of failure generally serve as a self fulfilling prophecy; individuals with low self efficacy are more likely to feel anxious, stressed or depressed about completing a task
- the degree to which an individual is confident that he/she is capable of doing an exercise activity is referred to as exercise efficacy
exercise efficacy
the degree to which an individual is confident that he/she is capable of doing an exercise activity
Self efficacy comes from a number of different sources
- the most important source of SE is past-performance/mastery experience
- the 2nd is vicarious experience (observational learning)
*in vicarious experience, the behaviour of comparable ppl is used as a comparative standard for the individual - 3rd source of SE is verbal persuasion
*the influence of VP is generally weak although sport/PA/exercise people seem to believe that it is of extreme importance - 4th source refers to an individuals physiological state
*has particular relevance for exercise, physiological state doesn’t influence a lot but it does with exercise since it’s how you feel; sometimes you just don’t feel like exercising - 5th source is mood state
*this occurs because of previous success and failure are stored in memory and recalled with associated mood states
