Lecture 16 - Exercise and Behavioural Control Flashcards
who is responsible for your behaviour?
when individual responsibility is promoted, people are responsible for what happens to them
- generally speaking, this is the approach that has been promoted in exercise (here’s the facts about exercise, it’s your responsibility to do it)
- a number of researchers have suggested that exercise participants need to progress to a state of fitness independence
- it is therefore suggested each individual is responsible for acquiring the knowledge and skill to improve and maintain their fitness levels and their health
main theory that looks at the relationship responsibility and behaviour
locus of control
what is locus of control
LOC refers to the extent that ppl believe or perceive that a goal/reward/reinforcement is within their control, or is due to chance
- LOC is a psychological concept that refers to how strongly ppl believe that they have control over the situation and experiences that affect their lives
relate locus of control to education/students
in education, LOC typically refers to how students perceive the causes of their academic success or failures in school (got a bad only mark cuz the prof sucks, got a good grade in spite of shitty prof)
describe a student with an internal vs external locus of control
- students w/ internal LOC generally believe that their success or failure is a result of the effort and hard work (or lack thereof) they invest in their education
- students w/external LOC generally believe that their success/failures result from external factors beyond their control (i.e. luck, teacher is out to get me, fate, prof is prejudiced and unskilled)
*internal students are considered more likely to work hard in order to learn, progress, succeed while external are more likely to believe that working hard is pointless because someone/something is treating them unfairly
benefits of internal locus of control
- more willing to do things that will improve their situation
- work hard to develop their knowledge, skills and abilities
- recognize that they almost always have a choice in their situation
- internally oriented children tend to have more internally oriented parents
- internals experience more shame and guilt when things don’t go well, even when problems are outside of their control
relate individuals with internal/external LOC to exercise
- internals exercise more and exhibit fewer health compromising behaviour
- internal parent are more likely to encourage their children to take responsibility for their health
- internally oriented students are more likely to exercise
- internals report higher levels of self efficacy
- internals tend to be more psychologically healthier
- externals tend to be more defensive when things don’t go well
