Lecture 5 - Physical Activity Theories and Quality of Life Flashcards
what is the HBM
HEALTH BELIEF MODEL
- illness avoidance model; people exercise so to avoid something bad happening i.e. type 2 diabetes or obesity
according to the Health Belief Model, what needs to occur for people to exercise
- need to process a certain level of motivation and knowledge
- need to see themselves as vulnerable to illness/something bad happening
- need to see the condition (i.e. diabetes) as threatening
- need to be convinced of the benefits of PA/how PA can help
- see few/no difficulties in participating in PA
What is the TRA
THEORY OF REASONED ACTION
- based on the idea that people make rational decisions of their behaviour based on their beliefs and information
- uses INTENTION, people do what they intend to do
what is the #1 predictor of whether or not someone will exercise
INTENTION
- people who eventually intend to exercise have a higher change of exercising then people who don’t intend to exercise
what impacts someones intention
attitudes and normative behaviour (norms)
relate perceived behavioural control to the TRA
adding the concept of perceived behaviour control to the TRA becomes the THEORY OF PLANNED BEHAVIOUR
- based on the idea that we can override TRA (attitudes and norms) because you control your behaviour and if the incentive is good enough then you ignore norms and attitudes
who is more influence by norms
younger people are much more influenced by norms
- younger people find norms much more important, they become less important as you grow up
what is the PIT
PERSONAL INVESTMENT THEORY
- suggests that people will exercise if exercise has meaning to them
PIT is based on which 5 assumptions
- study of motivation involves studying behaviour
- the choice of ppls behaviour is important; (what people chose to do is important)
- as humans beings, we’re constantly faced with choices
- individuals pattern of behaviour reflect personal investment; the person who is at this gym all the time puts alot of investment into PA
- choices that ppl make gives insight to the meaning of that activity (what you do and how hard you do it shows what it means to you; people invest in what matters to them)
what is QoL
there is no widely accepted definition of QoL;however, the most accepted term in exercise PSYCH is health related QoL
- HRQoL is a multidisciplinary umbrella concept thats made up of broad topics of well being:
- physical health and functioning
- mental health
- social roles and social activities
- pain-free/no chronic pain
- have quality relationships
- employment/have a job (some ppl)
- leisure activities (ones that are meaningful)
- education
- resilience (how you can bounce back)
how to we analyze QoL
We can look at two different perspectives
Quantitative
- objective measures observed by an external person
Qualitative
- a subjective measure of QoL are done by the individual themselves and revolve around an evaluation of life satisfaction and life functioning
how much exercise do you need to improve Quality of Life
we don’t know, still an ongoing area of research
