Q

% of men and women that are 20% or more of desirable weight and why is this problematic

A

desirable weight = if you’re X build then you should be Y weight
- 27% of women are 20% or more of desirable weight
- 24% of men are 20% or more of desirable weight
* this is problematic because obesity is linked to may diseases and conditions w/significant threats to physical health but is also linked to mental health concerns (Self esteem, self efficacy, body image)

Q

what is the best predictor on long term weight management (also an important variable with losing weight)

A

Regular exercise
- an important variable in losing weight but also the best predictor of WM
- it has been demonstrated that is you lose weight w/out exercising (dieting), you are almost certain to follow a pattern of weight regain (how long can you keep up the diet)
research shows that diet combined with reg exercise leads to much better WL maintenance

Q

Kaymon’s research study

A

examined 2 groups of women
1. women who had been overweight, lost the weight and kept it off
2. women who were overweight, lost it then regained it
- 90% of Group 1 engaged in regular PA
- only 20% of Group 2 engaged in regular PA
suggested that diet and exercise both have a similar short term effect on WL

Q

Grillo’s research study

A

160 police officers were randomly one of four diets then were placed in a group that exercised, or a non exercise group
- study found that after 8wks, there was no significant difference in any of the groups; they all lost weight
- after 18mo F/U and reweigh, the weight had returned for those who did not exercise, regardless of the type of diet they had
- in contrast the exercise groups maintained their WL
exercise works best for the WL maintenance on a long term basis
