Lecture 6 - Physical Activity and Cancer Flashcards
worldwide, cancer causes more deaths then which diseases
more deaths than AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria deaths combined
leading causes of cancer in North American men and women
cancer is the 2nd leading cause of health related deaths in NA, after heart disease
- lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer in men and women
Men
1. lung
2. colo-rectal cancer
3. prostate
Women
1. lung
2. brest cancer
3. colorectal
risk of developing cancer in men and women
in the US, the probability of men developing cancer is 1 in 2 and women is 1 in 3
- risk of diagnosis increases with age (77% of all cancer patients were 55 or older)
what is cancer
cancer is a catch all term used to describe a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells that can occur in any part or organ in the body
- there are over 200 types of cancer
how do we classify cancer
by the stage of its spread (Stage 1-4)
Stage 1: early detection, not much spread; localized
Stage 4: large spread and advanced disease
rates of depression in cancer patients
cancer survivors have greater rates of depression then depression rates in the general population.
they face…
- shock of diagnosis
- the burden of treatment
- threat of dying
how can cancer be a turning point
cancer diagnosis can be a turnaround moment where survivors are more likely to be motivated to make lifestyle changes and improve their health
exercising during cancer treatment can…
- increase QoL
- increase self esteem
- increase self efficacy
- decrease anxiety and depression
in fit/active cancer patients compared to unfit/inactive cancer patients
% of cancer patients that meet the minimum PA guideline requirements
research shows that in North America, 75% of cancer survivors are not meeting the requirements (similar to gen pop)
- it should be noted that PA motivation and behaviour change is a major challenge for cancer survivors who often feel symptoms and side effects from treatments that present unique barriers to exercise participation and adherance
- research indicates that cancer patients significantly reduce their PA levels during treatment but then do no return to pre-diagnosis levels once treatment is completed
