1
Q
Biological Treatments
A
Electroconvulsive therapy (ELT)
- first to treat schiz
- little electrical current to brain
- temporary seizures
- effective for severe depression
- relapse= common
- side effects like short term mem loss
2
Q
biological treatment drugs: what are 3 waves
A
- Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors
- Tricylic medications
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
3
Q
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors
A
- breaks down monoamines (serotonin)
- MAO inhibitors block monoamine oxidase
- serious side effects= hypertension= stroke
4
Q
Tricylic medications
A
- block presynaptic reuptake of serotonin and noradrenaline
- negative side effects= common– dry mouth, blurred vision, tremor
5
Q
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
A
- specifically block reuptake of serotonin
- negative side effects= fewer, less serious– insomnia, agitation, nausea
6
Q
psychological treatments
A
- CBT: lower relapse rates vs drug alone
- interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT): beginning of depression
- mindfulness based cog therapy: reduce relapse, notice and try to distance from depressive thoughts– try to reduce rumination (thinking about something)
7
Q
cog. diathesis-stress models
A
Beck: - schema
Seligman: helplessness, - attributions
Cog. style and - events–> depression
8
Q
when is most critical time for Major depression
A
mid adolescence
- negative cog. styles consolidate
- increased stress during adolescence
9
Q
diff way to cope stress
A
rumination (think about it) vs. problem solving
10
Q
causes of depression in pre-adolescents
A
- negative events–> cog. style–> depression
- depressed parent
- emotional abuse, neglect
