Lecture 6 (Deep Srtucure Of The Neck) Flashcards
Why is the cervical plural in children more susceptible to injury
Because it extend higher because of relatively short neck
What is cervical pleura?
superior continuation of the costal & mediastinal parts of the parietal pleura; superiorly the pleura forms a
cup-like dome called the pleural cupola
What are the three branches that come off the aortic arch?
Branceocephalic artery (RIGHT CCA + RIGHT SA branch off it)
LEFT Common carotid artery
LEFT Subclavian artery
Name a vein that drains directly into brachiocephalic vein, not subclavian
Inferior thyroid vein
What is the thoracic duct
A major lymphatic drainage channel. Begins from the abdomen and ascending towards the thoracic cavity
What veins does the thoracic duct drains into?
enters the venous system between the left internal jugular vein & the left subclavian vein
What are the prevertebral muscles?
Anterior vertebral muscles
Lateral vertebral muscles
What are the anterior vertebral muscles
. Longus colli
• Longus capitis
• Rectus capitis anterior
• Anterior scalene
What are the lateral vertebral muscles?
• Rectus capitis lateralis
• Splenius capitis
• Levator scapulae
• Middle & posterior scalenes
What is the role of the longus colli muscle (anterior vertebral muscles)?
flexes neck with rotation to opposite side (unilaterally)
What is the role of the rectus capitis anterior?
Flex the head
What is the role of the anterior scalene muscle?
Flex head
What is the role of the Rectus capitis lateralis (lateral vertebral muscle)
flexes & stabilises head
What is the function of the middle and posterior scalene muscle (lateral prevertebral muscle)
flex neck laterally; middle scalene elevates 1st rib, posterior s. 2nd rib during forced inspiration
What is the function of Splenius capitis (posterior prevertebral muscle)?
laterally flexes & rotates head and neck to same side;
bilaterally: extends head and neck
