Lecture 6-Basics Of The CNS Flashcards
What is emergence?
Complex behaviour emerges from interactions of individual, relatively simple units (neurons)
What are the three parts of the brain stem?
Midbrain
Pons
Medulla
What is decussation?
Body controlled by contralateral side of the brain as fibres cross from one hemisphere to the other
What is the role of the frontal lobe?
Higher cognition, motor and speech
What is the role of the parietal lobe?
Sensation, spatial awareness
What is the role of the temporal lobe?
Memory, smell and hearing
What is the role of the occipital lobe?
Vision
What is the role of the cerebellum?
Coordination and motor
What is the optic chiasm?
Site where optic nerve fibres cross over
What is the uncus?
Part of the temporal lobe that can herniate and compress the midbrain
What is the corpus callosum?
Fibres connecting two cerebral hemispheres
True or false: endoderm develops into the CNS
FALSE - ectoderm
What does the invagination of ectoderm depend on?
Folic acid
True or false: regeneration doesn’t occur in the PNS
FALSE - occurs in the PNS, not in the CNS
True or false: Schwann cells are part of the PNS
TRUE
