Lecture 5-Lymphatic System Flashcards
What is the function of lymphatic vessels?
Continuous removal of remaining tissue fluid from extracellular space back to blood circulation
Why is the lymphatic system a low pressure system?
No central pump
How does the lymphatic system overcome the issue of having no central pump?
Has valves for passive constriction (pulsation of an artery or muscle contraction) or intrinsic constriction
What is lymphoedema?
Abnormal collection of protein-rich fluid causing tissue swelling due to compromised lymphatic system
What can cause lymphoedema?
Infection
Removal of lymph nodes
Lack of limb movement
What is lymphadenopathy?
Enlarged lymph nodes due to infection or malignancy
What are the two main divisions of cervical lymph nodes?
- regional nodes (superficial)
- terminal nodes (deep)
What is the difference between regional and terminal nodes?
Regional drain specific areas
Terminal receive drainage from regional nodes
How are deep lymph nodes separated from superficial ones?
Investing layer of deep cervical fascia
What are the six superficial (regional) lymph nodes?
Submental Submandibular Pre-auricular Post-auricular Occipital Cervical
What are the three types of deep (terminal) lymph nodes?
Jugulo-digastric
Jugulo-omohyoid
Supraclavicular
Where does the submental node collect lymph from?
Lower lip
Floor of mouth
Apex of tongue
Where does the submandibular node collect lymph from?
Cheeks Lateral nose Upper lip Lateral lower lip Gums Anterior tongue Submental and facial nodes
Where does the pre-auricular node collect lymph from?
Superficial face and temporal region
Where does the post-auricular/mastoid node collect lymph from?
Posterior neck
Upper ear
Back off external auditory meatus
