What are the characteristics of a profession?
- Formalized education and training
- Authority
- Self reflection (reflective practice) and self improvement are constant and encouraged
- Professional culture
- Pride in profession
- Loyalty to colleagues
- Association with other members through appropriate organizations
- Members offer leadership to their professional organization
- Codes of ethics signed by all members
Why is it important to have formailzed education and training?
To teach the theory learned to be applied to real life problems
Apprenticeships, internships-> new identity
What are codes of ethics?
Sets out the ideals that dietitian should strict to achieve, focussing on the values needed to reach excellence
-uses verbs like pledge and promise
What are the ethical standards for thee teaching profession?
Represents a vision of professional practice
Inspire members to uphold the honour and dignity of the teaching profession
What are the code of ethics for the college of dietitian of Ontario?
- Respect for autonomy
-RD treat clients and their substitute decision maker as self governing decision makers - Beneficence
RD will act in the best interest of clients and society - Non Maleficence
-RD will avoid and minimize harm to others - Respect for Persons/Justice
-RD will show respect and treat others fairly and equitably
What are regulatory bodies?
Serve and protect the public interest. Regulate professions by law
-Most often called colleges
If your profession is regulated, what must you do for work and use your job title?
Have a license or certificate
Be registered with t he proper regulatory body

What is professional self regulation?
Government has delegated its regulatory functions. to those who have the specialized knowledge necessary to do the icon and are capable of governing themselves
What does it mean to self regulate professionally?
To honour the special skills, knowledge, and experience that a profession possesses

Teachers Nurses Doctors Charted Accountant Engineers Lawyers Architect Dietitian Dental Hygienists
What Is the CDO?
College of Dietitians of Ontario
-Serves and protects the public interest by assuring that only qualified people who have demonstrated competence to procaine dietetics become dietitian in Canada
What is the CDRE?
Canadian dietetics registration exam
-Successful completion of this exam confirms that your practice base knowledge, application, and critical thinking skill are. at the level of minimal competence and they your re safe to practice
Is the OHEA a regulatory body?
Yes
-provincial act recognized the right of individuals who have met the membership qualifications to use the designation PHEc
What does it mean to be registered with the OHEA/
Registered status provides for self regulation of member home economists by their Peres via a code of ethics, professional conduct and standards of practice
What does OHEA promote?
High professional standards among its members to assist families and individuals achieve and maintain a desirable quality of life
