Lecture 6 Flashcards
What are the major functions of the skeletal system?
Support, Movement, Protection, Storage & RBC formation
What does the axial skeleton consist of?
Head, neck & torsos
What does the appendicular skeleton consist of?
Bones that make the limbs - upper & lower
- pectoral girdle: scapula & clavicle
- pelvic girdle: Hip bones ONLY
What are the two gross structures that make up bone?
Compact & cancellous(spongy) bone
Where is compact bone found & what is its function?
Is dense & solid -found where strength & load bearing needed. In diaphysis/ shaft
Where is cancellous bone found? & what is its function?
Found at the ends of bones - epiphysis. Where shock absorption is required. criss crossing struts of trabeculae
What are the four different types of bone?
Long bone, flat bone, short bone & irregular bone
What is the function of flat bones?
Muscle attachement e.g scapula (shoulder blade)
What is the function of short bones?
Weight bearing & shock absorption - mainly cancellous bone
