Lecture 5 Flashcards
What does superior mean?
towards the head - UP
What does inferior mean?
towards the feet - DOWN
What does anterior mean?
towards the front - in front of
What does posterior mean?
closer to the back - in back of
What does medial mean?
towards the midline of the body
What does lateral mean?
away from the midline of the body
What does proximal mean?
toward or nearest the trunk of the body
What does distal mean?
farthest from the trunk - away from trunk
A proximal & distal example:
The elbow lies at the proximal end of the forearm while the hand lies at the distal end.
What does superficial mean?
Nearest the surface
What does deep mean?
Deep e.g bone is deep to skin
What occurs during flexion?
bending/folding of a part “flexing muscles”. Decreases the angle btw 2 bones at the joint
What occurs during extension?
reverse of flexion, resulting in the straightening of a joint. Increase the angle btw bones at a joint
What occurs during dorsiflexion?
Foot is tilted upward - decreases the angle btw top of foot and front of leg
What occurs during plantaflexion?
Pointing of foot - foot is stretched down - increases the angle btw top of foot and front of the leg
In what plane does flexion & extension occur in?
Sagittal plane
What occurs during abduction?
movement away from the medial plane of the body
What occurs during adduction?
reverse of abduction - movement towards the medial plane
In what plane does abduction & adduction occur?
Coronal plane
What occurs during Inversion?
IN - turns the sole of the foot in - sole of foot faces towards the midline
What occurs during Eversion
EXIT- turns it outward - sole of foot turns away from midline
What occurs during Pronation?
Posterior - Palm faces posterior
What occurs during Supination?
“spider man” - palm faces anterior
What is circumdution?
Generation of circular movement which is a combination of extension, flexion, abduction & adduction
What is rotation?
The pivoting of a bone on its own axis - rotation/turning of bone at the joint around its long axis
e.g rotating your femur at the hip joint so that your toes are facing in
What plane doe rotation occur in?
Transverse plan
What is the anatomical position?
Body is standing upright, looking straight ahead with the feet & palms of hand facing forward forward. Reference position
The coronal plane runs vertically through the body separating it into:
anterior & posterior parts
The transverse plane runs horizontally through the body separating it into:
superior & inferior parts
The sagittal plane runs vertically through the body separating it into:
left & right
