Lecture 10 Flashcards
What are the three joint types?
Fibrous joints
Cartilaginous joints
Synovial joints
What is the structure of fibrous joints?
tissue btw bone ends is DFCT - bones are held firmly together
What is the function of fibrous joints?
No movement - maximum stability
e.gcranial structure in bone
What is the structure of cartilaginous joints?
tissue btw bone ends is cartilage
- hyaline cartilage
- fibrocartilage
What is the function of cartilaginous joints?
allows some movement & provides stability
e.g intervertebral disks
What is the structure of synovial joints?
bone ends held together by a joint capusule 0 sleeve like extension of the periosteum
What is the function of synovial joints
Allow large ROM - maximum movement.
- facilitation of free & controlled movement
What structures is a synovial joint made up of?
ALL: Joint capsule, ligaments, synovial membrane, hyaline cartilage, joint cavity
SOME: Menisci, bursae
What are the two types of ligaments found in synovial joints?
- Capsular ligaments
- Intracapsular ligaments
What are capsular ligaments?
Ligaments fused to capsule
-tight & thick were support is required
What are intracapsular ligaments?
Holds bones together
Restricts movement btw bones
