Lecture 1 Flashcards
What are the four tissue types found in our body?
Epithelial, Connective, Muscle and Nervous tissu
How is epithelial tissue arranged?
Give examples:
Tightly packed cells - arranged in layers which are very close together with VERY LITTLE ECM. e.g Outer layer of skin, lining in the digestive tracts
What is the function of epithelial tissue?
PROTECTION - covers and protects the body surface. Lines body cavities
How is connective tissue arranged?
Give examples:
Sparsely arranged cells which are surrounded by LOTS OF ECM.
e.g Bones, joint cartilage, blood, tendons & ligaments.
What is the function of connective tissue?
Supports body structure & transports substance throughout the body - blood
How is muscle tissue arranged?
Give examples:
Long fibre like cells, the muscle types are:
- smooth
- cardiac
- compact
e. g heart muscle, muscles in walls of hollow organs such as stomach & intestine
What is the function of muscle tissue?
Movement - body and organs. Produces heat
How is nervous tissue arranged?
Give examples:
Mixture of neurons(conducting cells) & neurogliaa(support cells)
e.g nerves of body
What is the function of nervous tissue?
Communication btw different parts of the body
What are the levels of organisation that contribute to the human body?
- Molecular/Atomic
-Organelles
-Cells
-Tissue
-Organ
