Lecture 6 Flashcards
Extracellular Matrix
Network of fibres that connect cells
Collagen
Long chain of quaternary structure, forms structure of ECM, connects cells over long distances, cells organize on collagen scaffold
Fibronectin
Links collagen to integrins
Integrins
Proteins that span bilayer and link extracellular matrix to cytoskeleton
Epithelial Layer
Layer of cells between you and your environment, can be one layer or multiple layers
Apical Surface
Outsider of body
Basal
Inside body, blood and lymph
Tumour
Mass of cells growing out of control in a location they shouldn’t be, arise from unregulated cell division, requires an accumulation of mutations
Tight Junctions
Right at apical barrier, function as rivets holding layers together, seal cells together and prevent passage of molecules between cells and environment
Desmosomes
Distribute a stretching force across a tissue, connect adjacent cytoskeletons by intermediate filaments
Gap Junctions
Basal lateral junctions, provide non-selective transport of small molecules between adjacent cells, sharing of nutrients, signals and cytoplasm
Interrelated Disk
Structure between heart muscle cells
