Lecture 5: Lymphatic System Flashcards
How do capillaries filter fluid from the blood?
- hydrostatic pressure from the heart
- osmotic pressure from ihgh conc. of proteins in blood
Edema stems from what?
build-up of lymph
What is associated with an increase in edema?
- reduced physical activity
- low blood pressure
- damage to valves in lymohatic vessels
- cutting through lymphatic vessels during surgery
What are the 2 regions of lymph nodes?
- sinuses containing macrophages & dendritic cells
- inner medula with plasma, T, & B cells
What are the functions of lymph nodes?
- monitor/ filter harmful particles from lymph
- major site of lymphocyte production
- lymphocytes attack bacteria, parasites, & viruses
What are the 2 lymphatic ducts?
- thoracic duct -> collects lymph from most of the body
- right lymphatic duct -> collects from right upper side
All blood cells form where?
bone marrow
What are thymocytes?
cells that travel from the bone marrow to thymus then mature into T cells
Where do thymocytes mature?
in the cortex
What are the 2 regions of the thymus?
outer cortex & inner medulla
What cells are in the outer cortex of the thymus?
- epithelial
- macrophages
- dendritic
What are MHC proteins?
specialized surface proteins used to present antigens
What is positive selection in the lymphatic system?
whether or not a thymocyte can bind to MHCs (no= apoptosis; yes= move on to medulla) (want yes)
What receptors help to distinguish T cells?
CD4 & CD8
What is negative selection in the lymphatic system?
whether cells can bind to antigens (want to be no)
What are CD 4 T cells?
helper T cells thatactivate required immune response
What are CD8 T cells?
- cytotoxic T cells that destroy foreign invaders & infected cells
- induce apoptosis
What part of the lymphatic system promote infection by pathogens?
lymphoid
What organ acts as a lymph node for the blood?
spleen
What organ promotes pathogen access in order to destroy them and teach their identity to lymphocytes?
tonsils
Why do lymphs move into lymphatic capillaries?
osmotic pressure in the tissue
