Lecture 1: Organization & Homeostasis Flashcards

1
Q

What are the 4 types of tissue?

A
  • connective -> connects things
  • epithelial -> protects, secretes, & absorbs
  • muscle -> moves things
  • nervous -> communication & control

Q

What are the systems in the body?

A
  • integument -> protection
  • skeletal & muscular -> structure & movement
  • circulatory & lymphatic -> transport
  • digestive -> breakdown & absorption of nutrients
  • excretory -> removes waste from blood; osmoregulation
  • reproduction -> fertilization; production & storage of gametes
  • nervous -> transfers message b/w brain & body (electrochemical signals)
  • endocrine -> regulates hormones that alters function fo cells (chemical signals)

Q

What are the components of homeostasis?

A
  • recpetor -> collects info & compares to set point
  • set point -> value that factor should be; main set point is hypothalamus
  • effector -> causes response to return to set point; muscle or gland

Q

What are the characteristics of the negative feedback system?

A
  • returns to equilibrium
  • normal water levels -> nothing
  • high water levels -> ADH inhibition
  • low water levels -> ADH secretion

Q

What are the characteristics of the postitive feedback system?

A
  • moves AWAY from normal & short lived
  • chemicals that stimulayte blood clotting
  • hormones that trigger uterine contractions in birth
  • changes that trigger fever
