lecture 36 - female reproduction Flashcards
what does the female urogenital triangle contain
external genitalia = vulva
what does the female anal triangle contain
anus
what is the mon pubis in the vulva (external genitalia)
in front of the pubis symphysis
what are the labia majora
larger and more lateral labia (lips)
what are the labia minora
smaller and more medial labia (lips)
what is the space between the labia (associated with the vagina) called
vestibule
where are the vestibular glands
deep in the labia
what do the vestibular glands do
lubricate the vagina orifice
what does the clitoris contain
glands, body, crura x2, bulbs x2
what is the most lateral portion of the uritine tube and what does it represent
infundibulum = funnel shaped with finger like projections called fimbriae
what is the mid portion of the uritine tube and what does it represent
ampulla = dilated area where fertilisation occurs (normally)
what is the most medial portion of the uritine tube and what does it represent
isthmus = means narrow passage
what is the outer layer of the uterus called
perimetrium = connective tissue
what is the middle layer of the uterus called
myometrium = smooth muscle
what is the inner layer of the uterus called and what does it contain
endometrium = columnar epithelium, uterine glands and arteries,
layer that sheds during menstration
what are the two layers of the endometrium
inner layer = functional layer (functionalis)
thinner layer = basal layer
what are the three sections of the cervix
- external os
- cervical canal
- internal os
what does the cervix produce and what is it important for
produces cervical mucus
- important for preventing infection in the upper part of the reproductive tract
what is the complex blood supply of the female reproductive tract
direct branches off the abdominal aorta and internal iliac arteries
- ovarian arteries
- uterine artery
- vaginal artery
how does the uterine artery split
branches off into uterus where is spilts to form arcuate arteries
then spilts again to form redial arteries
what is the location of the ovaries
- lateral and posterior to the uterus
- lateral portion of the true pelvic cavity
what does the ovary contain
outer cortex and inner medulla
what occurs in the ovaries
site of oogenesis and hormone production (e.g oestradiol)
what is the corpus lutem
produced when the oocyte is released and it produced progesterone
what is the three divisions of the broad ligament
- mesometrium (of the womb)
- mesoalpinx (of the tube)
- mesovarian (of the ovary)
what stimulates the development of the breast tissue
estradiol and progesterone
what is the vesicouterine pouch
continuous fold of broad ligament (visceral peritoneum) over anteriorly located bladder
what is the rectouterine pouch
continuous fold of broad ligament (visceral peritoneum) over posteriorly located rectum
