Lecture 3 - Volitional models Flashcards
intention behavior gap def
people have good intentions but fail to act on them
needs to bridge the I-B gap
action plans
coping plans
action planning
- implementation planning
- where, when, how
- specify situation –> perceptual readiness
- specify behavior –> behavioral readiness
- passing control to environmental cues to automize behavior
perceptual readiness
mental representation of situations become activated
- easier to detect situations
- readily attent to the situation
- recall the situation more effectively
behavioral readiness
automization of the intended behavior once the critical situation occurs
- no conscious intend required
coping plans
anticipation on barriers
- if this, than…
Health action process approach
the gap between intention and action is bridged by action and coping planning
- motivational phase: goal setting
- volitional phase: goal pursuit
- each phase is influenced by self-efficacy
HAPA motivational phase
- Outcome expectancies: a person’s beliefs that performing behavior will lead to desired outcomes
- Risk perception: a person’s belief in the severity of a health condition and his vulnerability toward it
- action self-efficacy: optimistic beliefs about personal agency during the motivational phase
^ lead to intention
volitional phase
- Action plans: detailed plans about when, where and how the behavior is executed
- Coping plans: detailed plans of what to do if something interferes with achieving goals
- Action control: comprises three facets:
o Self-monitoring
o Awareness of standards
o Self-regulatory effort: initiation and maintenance of behavior and recovery when behavior was interrupted (relapse)
HAPA predictors of succes
motivational phase:
- action self-efficacy
- outcome expectations
- risk perception
volitional phase:
- strong intention
- action and coping plans
- volitional self-efficacy
