Lecture 3 Flashcards
Adhesion
The attraction between different kinds of molecules
Base
A substance that reduces the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution
Buffer
Substance the consists of acid and base forms in a solution and minimizes changes in pH when extraneous acids and bases are added to solution
Cohesion
The binding together of like molecules often by hydrogen bonds
Heat
Total amount of kinetic energy due to random motion of atoms or molecules in body of matter
Hydrogen ion
A single proton with a charge of 1+
Hydrophilic
Having an affinity for water
Hydrophobic
Having an aversion to water, forming droplets in water
Molarity
A common measure of solute concentration.
Mole
The number of grams of a substance that equals it’s molecular weight in daltons and contains Avogadro’s number of molecules
pH
A measure of hydrogen ion concentration ranging in value from 0-14
Polar molecule
A molecule such as water with opposite charges on different ends of the molecule
Solute
A substance that is dissolved in water
Solution
A liquid that is a homogenous mixture of two or more substances
Solvent
The dissolving agent of a solution. Water
