Lecture 19 Flashcards
Allopatric speciation
Occurs when biological populations of the same Species become vicariant
Biological species concept
Defines a species as members of populations that actually or potentially interbreed nature
Gradualist model
Most evolution is marked by long periods of evolutionary stability
Morphological species concept
Morphospecies and the recognition is based on overall similarity
Polyploid
Containing more than two homologous sets of chromosomes
Punctuated equilibrium
The hypothesis that evolutionary development is marked by isolated episodes of raped speciation between long periods of little or no change
Adaptive radiation
A process in which organisms diversify rapidly into a multitude of new forms
