Lecture 17 Flashcards
Bacteriophage/phage
A virus that parasitizes a bacterium by infecting it and reproducing inside it
Capsid
The protein she’ll of a virus particle that surrounds it’s nucleic acid
Conjugation
Is the direct transfer of DNA from one bacterial cell to another bacterial cell
f factor
A DNA sequence or plasmid that confers certain bacteria the ability to produce sex pilus for conjugation with other bacteria
Generalized transduction
Process by which any bacterial gene may be transferred to another bacterium via a bacteriophage and typically carries only bacterial DNA
HIV
A lentivirus that causes hiv infection and immunodeficiency syndrome
AIDS
A disease in which there is a severe loss of the body’s cellular immunity
