Lecture 24 - Cell damage I Flashcards
What causes hypoxic injury?
A reduction in oxygen delivery -> ischaemia
Necrosis =
cell death from an adverse external event, usually accidental and detrimental
What are the 4 types of necrosis?
Coagulation, liquefaction, caseous, gangrenous
What is coagulation necrosis?
Denaturation of all cytoplasmic proteins including the proteolytic enzymes leading to an immune response
What is liquefaction necrosis?
Proteolytic enzymes convert the necrotic tissue to a fluid consistency
What is gangrenous necrosis?
Necrotic tissue which has been secondarily infected by saprophytic organisms
What are the 3 types of gangrenous necrosis?
Wet, dry, gaseous
What are the 3 critical components of cellular function?
Boundary functions, energy metabolism and protein synthesis
