Lecture 23 Flashcards
When and by who was the first work regarding the ozone done?
1978 by Sherwood Rowland
Who was Sherwood Rowland and what did he work on?
A chemist with an interest in the atmosphere and worked on CFC’s
When, by who, and for what were CFC’s created?
1930 by Dupoint for fridges
CFC’s have ___’s of uses because they are what
100’s of uses because they are a compressible gas that is inert
By the late 1960’s how many KG of CFC’s were released every year?
Millions
What question did Rowland ask?
Where did the CFC’s go?
What three things and what did they result in did Rowlands experiment focus on
1) UV light onto O3 resulted in O3
2) UV light onto CFC resulted in the breakdown of CFC
3) UV light onto CFC and O3 resulted in the breakdown of CFC
What did Rowlands findings force the congress to do and when
They banned all non essential use of CFC’s in 1970
When was the hole in the ozone become an issue?
in 1985
How does the hold in the Ozone work?
In a multi step process
1) Due to being inert CFC’s can travel to the upper atmosphere
2) In the upper atmosphere CFC’s are photolysis and produce HCL and CLONO2
3) PSC’s catalyses HCL and CLONO2 into Cl2 and HNO3
4) UV light photoyzed Cl2 into CLO which describes the ozone
What does photolysis mean
The splitting of something by sunlight
What does HCL and CLONO2 do in the upper atmosphere and does it cause damage?
It does not cause direct damage but it does drift around the atmosphere
Each molecule of CLO can remove how many molecules of ozone
1000+
