Lecture 23 Flashcards
what is the relation of self to possibilities
there are not objective set of possibilities for everyone, they are contingent on the individual, hence you have a relationship to your possibilities
what is relation of self to necessities
objective relation: you must eat food, you will die etc.
what is relation to infinite
your relation to things that are ‘infinite’ (music art etc)
what is losing yourself in the infinite
lost in music, art
what is losing yourself in the finite
lost in job, etc.
what is relation to the finite
your relation to things that are ‘finite’ (Job etc.)
what is relation to temporal
can’t be a student at UBC forever, that is your relation to the temporal
what is relation to eternal
something must be eternal, one way or another something has to continue
how does kierkegaard describe humanity as a synthesis
synthesis of all these terms (possibilities, necessities, infinite, finite, eternal, temporal)
synthesis is the relation between two or more terms
what is the self
how i relate to my relations
the relations are objective to the individual, how you relate to them is your self.
for example, two people could have cancer. how you relate to the fact that you have cancer is a part of your self/identity. Not all people that have cancer act the same
how does kierkegaard explain Human freedom
we do not have to relate to relations in one single way, we are free to relate to them however we please, which creates space for the self
what is despair within the context of synthesis
not relating to these facts the way that I should. Despair lies in the relation to the relation, not the relation itself
what is grounded
grounded in the way I should be
how does despair exist
cookie cutter example, cutter is power establishing me but once cutter is removed I am free to move and thus can move out of whack
what does sin mean
missed the mark
