Lecture 18 Flashcards
subjectivity must be our point of departure
existence precedes essence
existence precedes essence
we born first and then give our life purpose
paperknife example
essence precede existence, purpose precedes its creation
how would essence preceed existence in theism
- if human being is created by god, god must have first had concept and then brought about human beings
- goes for general humans and individual
- individual purpose and role
- essence preceeds existence
- individual purpose and role
- goes for general humans and individual
what is sates position on athiestic existentialism
it is more consistent
what does existence preceding essence mean
man exists first and then defines himself
- to begin with he is nothing
- he will not be anything until later
- and then he will be what he makes of himself
- thus there is no human nature
- there is no God to have conception of it
what makes humans difference than other things in terms of existence preceding essence
has to do with human self consciousness and freedom. humans are not simply animals of instinct
Fungus does not have self consciousness and freedom
what is phenomenology
philosophy of experience
what was the point of sartes phenomenology of humanity
being in itself and being for us
being for us is being able to relate things. part of our experience surrounded by inanimate objectes, and subject to the laws of nature despite us ourselves not being subject to laws of nature.
we are not simply being blown away like leaves , we are one step behind reality
(this is nothingness, as in being and nothingness)
why does objective meaning require god
because without god, there is no reason to do anything and there is no right or wrong way to do that. blueprint to humanity presupposed some kind of judge/god
what doe sarte mean by essence
objective purpose or morality
Sartre position on “take care of sick mother vs go to war, what do i do?”
- no objective right choice
- even if you choose old values, you have chosen that
- no such thing as no choice
- bad faith
- denial of freedom
- its on you
- no such thing as no choice
what does sarte mean when he says you essentially get to choose how you live
- correct way (kraal) is that moral values is something i choose
- human being cant just choose to be giraffe
- whether i want to follow golden rule or not is up to me
