Lecture 13 Flashcards
what is attunement
vibe
what is chapter 22 genesis
test of Abraham
what are Sumerians
earliest known civilization
what is the promise to Abraham
in your offspring (seed) all people will be blessed
what is the rabbinical interpretation of the promise to Abraham
emergence of nation for people of Israel
what is the christian interpretation of the promise to Abraham (new testament)
messiah will come through your lineage and all people will be blessed (Jesus is a descendent of Abraham)
what is the command to Abraham
take your son isaac, whom you love, and go to the mountain and present him there as sacrifice
what happens after Abraham received command
- next morning he saddled donkey and goes up mountain silently
- prepares alter and puts isaac there
- god intervenes through angel
- claims that he passed test of abraham
- abraham walks down mountain with Isaac
what proves Abrahams belief in Isaac living despite the sacrifice
- before he ascends mountain he tells servant’s that ‘me and my son will come down mountain’
- believed isaac would be raised from the dead by god if he did die
what is the story of the city of sodom
- city of sodom is so wicked that they are going to be judged/destroyed(three chapters prior)
- abraham has nephew there
- abraham says god shouldnt destroy the city if there are 20 righteous poeple (far be it from you god)
- Abraham keeps going down, if there are only a few righteous poeple would you destroy it?
- God says no
- Abraham holding god to ethical standard (should not the judge of all the earth do what is right?)
how does the story of sodom affect the story of mount Moriah
something has changed in Abraham, now he obeys blindly, despite Isaac obviously being innocent. He silently abides by gods command
what is the common response to the story of Abraham
this is everything wrong w religion
what does Kierkegaard think of the story of Abraham
this is a very complicated, deep story. He wants to get into Abraham’s mind and understand the religious from within
story of Abraham section 1 proposal
- acts like a monster
- says it is his own will
- better for Isaac to hate his father than hate god
story of Abraham section 2 proposal
- becomes sad dejected
- nothing brings him joy
- transformed him to the worst
story of Abraham section 3 proposal
- begs gods forgiveness for having been willing to sacrifice Isaac
- forgotten his duty
- imannuel kant (should have recognized that this voice could not have come from god as god would never go against the ethical)
story of Abraham section 4 proposal
- Isaac lost his faith
what is the breast weening thing intertwined in attunement and what is its function in relation to Abraham
- The story about abraheem is like the blackening of the breast with the coal
- It is something which gives the person who reads the story the feeling that god is not a god of love
- the mother was as loving as she was before she blackened the chalk
- the child will not necessarily see that
- story has dual function
- abraham needed to be brought to this point
- if he took it the wrong way he would be alienated
- there has to come a point where the baby is weened
- this implies suffering
- lucky are you if you see this as horrible because you dont see the bigger picture?
what is Kierkegaards complaint in the preface
everyone believes they have critical thinking yet they believe everything, not knowing critical thinking is a skill
what is Kierkegaards complaint with moving on from faith
no longer live in a world of faith, we live in a world of science and have moved on from faith. However by going beyond faith, you show that you never really understood faith. Faith cannot be moved on from, if you have moved on from it you are no longer talking about faith
