Lecture 21 Flashcards
what does kierkegaard mean when he says his goal is to be edifying
he wants his writing to be moving, to speak to the individual. Not dispassionate like a science textbook, stating information an an objective manner
what is the sick bed analogy kierkegaard uses
the reader is in a sick bed, there is no time to be mucking about, the goal of the book is to be edifying and ‘save’ the reader
what are Kierkegaards thoughts on individuality
true christianity relies on revealing your raw authenticity for god, not just pandering to public opinion
‘objectivity’ or ‘scientific’ is not real. Illusion that we are not subjects
what does keirekegaard think on ‘dispassionate scholarly inquiry’
not serious, anything that does not put your subjectivity at the forefront is not serious. Talking about humans but humans are nothing but subjective
what does anti climacus mean
climacus is a psydoynym and a skeptic
anti climacus is hyper religious, closest to real kierkegaard
what is the sickness unto death
despair
why is death not the sickness unto death
because Jesus said that Lazarus dying was not the sickness unto death, there was something more. Physical death is not the sickness unto death
what are the three things that are not the sickness unto death
1) actual death
2) hell
3) misery, pain, grief etc.
why does only the christian understand the sickness unto death
for someone not religious, misery pain grief etc ARE the worse thing. Those who are religious know that there is something far worse
