Lecture 2 - Part 1 Flashcards
general term applied to the handling of crops, whether used for food other purposes..
Postharvest or Postproduction
a system of storing and transporting agricultural commodities after harvest.
Postharvest operation/management/handling
includes the food loss across the food supply chain from harvesting of crop until its consumption
Postharvest loss
The losses can be broadly categorized as:
weight loss due to spoilage or nutritional loss
quality loss
seed viability loss (seed ageing/deterioration)
starts from the time the operator starts the engine of the machine up to the time the operator stops the engine
Fuel consumption rate
from the time the machine started operating to harvest up to the time it harvested the last stalk
Total Operating Time
before the test run, randomly select three 1-m x 1-m area within the test plot and manually harvest the panicles. The harvested panicles in each area shall be collected, labelled and taken to the laboratory for analysis
Potential yield
ratio of the weight of grains that remained in the panicles of the plants fed into the threshing chamber, to the weight of total grain input
Unthreshed loss
ratio of the weight of grains blown with the chaff by the thresher fan, to the weight of the total grain input of the thresher, expressed in percent
Blower loss
ratio of the weight of grains that fell out from the machine during threshing operation, to the weight of the total grain input of the thresher, expressed in percent
Scattering loss
ratio of the weight that come out of the threshing chamber with the straw, to the weight of total grain input of the thresher, expressed in percent
