lecture 19 - respiratory system Meds Flashcards
What is Asthma?
chronic disease
- inflammation of bronchial epithelium with swelling (oedema)
- bronchoconstriction
- excess secretion of mucus
How is asthma classified?
based on cause
1. allergy
2. exercise induced
3. infection of respiratory tract
What are common symptoms of asthma?
chest pain
chest tightness
coughing
difficulty breathing
short of breath
wheezing
What are the 2 treatments for asthma?
- Relievers - Rescuers
- controllers
What do “relievers” do?
for asthmatic attacks
- typically beta 2 agonists
What do “controllers” do?
PREVENTION!!
if you have asthma (treats underlying inflammation of airways)
take it daily regardless if there is an asthmatic attack
increases threshold –> need more irritants in order to enact an asthmatic attack!
What do Beta 2 Adrenergic agonists do?
- relieve bronchospasm of asthma
- treat bronchitis
- adverse affect = increased HR
What are the names of 3 Beta 2 Adrenergic agonists medications?
- Ventolin
- epinephrine –>Epipen (ONLY IF DYING AT HOSPITAL)
- Formoterol
What are Xanthines used for?
- anti-asthmatic
- to treat emphysema
- broncodilation
What is one name of a Xanthine mediation?
aminophyline –> somophyllin
What are some common classes of “Controllers” (x4) ?
- Corticosteroids
2.Leukotriene Inhibitors - Mast Cell Stabilizers
- Combination drugs
What are Leukotriene inhibitors used for?
- block synthesis of leukotrienes (this is for bronchoconstriction in prostoglandin synthesis pathway)
What does Mast Cell Stabilizers do?
inhibit release of bronchoconstrictors from pulmomary mast cells (ex: histamine)
What is the name of one Leukotriene inhibitor med?
montelukast –> Singulair
What is the name of one Mast Cell stabilizer med?
cromolyn –> NasalCrom
