lecture 11 - medications and autonomic system Flashcards
What are the 3 classification of sympathomimetic drugs?
- Catecholamines
- alpha1 Receptor agonists
- alpha2 Receptor agonists
What are the 3 Catecholamines names and trade name?
- Dopamine hydrochloride –> Dopamine (alpha 1 and beta 1)
- Epinephrine –> adrenalin
- norepinephrine bitartrate –> Levophed
What are sympathomimetics drugs?
-adrenergic agonists
- stimulate SYMPATHETIC nervous system (fight/flight)
What are adrenergic receptors?
where norepinephrine, dopamine, and epinephrine bind
consist of ALPHA (1 and 2) and BETA (1 and 2)
Where are ALPHA-adrenergic receptors found?
vascular smooth muscle
Where are BETA-adrenergic receptors found?
smooth and cardiac muscle
What is the one ALPHA1 agonist name and trade name?
phenylephrine –> Neo-synephrine Nasal
What does Alpha1 receptor agonists USED for?
- treat hypotension
- treat nasal congestion
- subconjunctival hemmorhage (red eye)
What is the mechanism of action for Alpha1 receptor agonists?
causes…
- vasoconstriction
-increased BP
-increased closure of internal sphincter of bladder
- increased peripheral resistance
What are the ADVERSE effects of Alpha1 receptor agonists?
blurred vision, constipation, urine retention, sweating
What are Alpha2 receptor agonists USED for?
to control neurotransmitter release by presynaptic neurons
INHIBIT sympathetic activity and LOWER blood pressure
What are the ADVERSE EFFECTS of Alpha2 receptor agonists?
hypotension
GI related
What is the one ALPHA2 AGONIST drug name and trade name?
clonidine –> Catapres (in the CNS)
What are “Sympatholytics/Adrenergic Antagonists” DIRECT acting?
have an affinity for receptor but block normal response
What are “Sympatholytics/Adrenergic Antagonists” INDIRECT acting?
block adrenergic nerve transmission by inhibiting release of NT or depleting stores of NT
What is the one “sympathetic ALPHA receptor antagonist” drug name and trade name?
doxazosin –> Cardura
