lecture 19 Flashcards
Rhizobium
refers to the root. There are 2 to 10 times more microbes in the rhizosphere than in the bulk soil.
Biological diversity
refers to the different species present, including genetic diversities.
Functional diversity
refers to the diversity of roles that the soil community plays in a particular ecosystem.
Type of diversity:
Biological diversity and Functional diversity.
Chemical engineers:
organisms responsible for decomposition and nutrient cycling.
Ecosystem engineers
Organisms responsible for maintaining soil structure through the formation of pore network and bio structures.
Symbiosis
a close and often long-terms interaction between two different biological species.
Nudule formation:
Flavonoid induces nodulation genes (nod genes) in the rhizobia.
Nitrogen fixation
n2 + 8H+ + 6 e- = 2NH3 + H2
Mycorrhizal fungi
form a symbiotic relationship with plant roots.
Penicillium bilaiae
another important fungal inoculant. NOT an AMF.
Rhizobial Inoculants
form a symbiotic relationship with legumes to enhance biological N fixation.
