Lecture 16 Flashcards
Pollination
Transfer of pollen from the anther (male) to the stigma (female)
How does fertilization occur?
The nucleus of the male gamete fuses with the ovule in the female ovary to create the seed.
How does fruit set and seed formation occur?
A small percentage of flowers develop into fruits. May be unpollinated or abort during development.
food storage tissue
food in the form of starch, oil, protein, or carbohydrates may be stored in the endosperm to cotyledons.
Testa
the seed coat and is a tough covering layer which protect the young embryo from damage.
Fruit
includes tissue that develops from a mother plant along with the seed.
Three basic parts of a seed are:
Embryo, food storage tissue, and testa.
Embryo:
created by fertilization of ovule
Food storage tissue:
Created by fertilization of ovule
Testa:
From the mother plant.
Embryo is a young plant and consists of:
Cotyledons, Plumule, and radicle
Cotyledons:
One of a monocot, two if a dicot.
Plumule:
will form new shoot, if monocots it is protected by the coleoptile.
radicle:
Will form the new root.
