Lecture 10 Flashcards
Three major mineral horizons
A, B, and C
an A horizon disturbed by human activities
Ap
an A horizon enriched with organic matter with a dark colour and granular structure.
Ah
an A horizon characterized by the elevation of clay, organic matter, iron, or aluminum alone or in combination.
Ae
a B horizon enriched with clay
Bt
a B horizon minimally altered by pedogenic processes to give a change in colour or structure, or both.
Bm
a B horizon in which both clay and sodium (Na) has accumulated.
Bnt
a C horizon enriched with carbonates
Cca
Organic horizons on well-drained sites
- ) L (Litter)
- ) F (Fermented)
- ) H (Humic)
Organic horizons on well drained sites: L (Litter)
Undecomposed residues.
Organic horizons on well drained sites: F (Fermented)
Partially decomposed residues
Organic horizons on well drained sites: H (Humic)
Decomposed organic matter
Organic horizons on poorly-drained sites.
- ) Of (Fibric)
- ) Om (Mesic)
- ) Oh (Humic)
Organic horizons on poorly-drained sites: of (fabric)
high in relatively undecomposed, fibrous material
Organic horizons on poorly-drained sites: Om (mesic)
high in less fibrous material (intermediate decomposition)
Organic horizons on poorly-drained sites: Oh (humic)
dominated by well decomposed organic residues
Soils are classifies as either _____ or _____
- ) Mineral soil
2. ) Organic soil
Chernozemic soil
Develops on grasslands. Diagnostic horizon = Ah, Ap, and Ahe.
Solonetzic soil
Develops on sodium-rich parent material. Diagnostic horizon = Bn or Bnt
Gleysolic Soil
Occur on wet and poorly drained areas. Diagnostic horizon = Bg or Cg.
Vertisolic Soil
Develop on glacial lacustrine parent material (clay). Diagnostic horizon = Css, Can and Bv.
Luvisolic Soil
Develops in forest. Diagnostic horizon = Bt.
Podzolic Soil
Develops in forests with acidic parent material. Diagnostic horizon = bf or Bh.
Brunisolic Soil
Forest soil order. Diagnostic horizon = Bm.
Regosolic Soil
Usually on landforms with unstable surface. No recognizable B horizon.
Organic Soil
Wetland soils in forested regions.
