What is Access?
A set of more specific areas of fit between the patient and the healthcare system

Accessibility is relationship between location of supply and location of clients, takes into account of client transportation resources and travel time, distance and cost.

The cost of provider services in relation to the client’s ability and willingness to pay for these services.

Availability is the relationship of the volume and type of existing services (and resources) to the clients volume and type of needs

Availability: There were not enough lifeboats for everyone
Accomodation: The lifeboats were lowered very slowly
Accessibility: There were lots of barriers to reaching the lifeboats
Acceptability: The social norms meant women were more likely to survive
Affordability: First class passengers were closer to the surface, meaning that they were more likely to reach the lifeboats and survive
What is potential and realised access?
Potential access refers to the availability of healthcare services to a person. Realised access, on the other hand, refers to the actual use of healthcare services. Can be determined by the individual’s perception of their need for care, their knowledge about the services available, their comfort level with the healthcare system and their ability to navigate the system
