Lecture 15 - Spinal Cord Anatomy Flashcards
What are the 2 spinal descending tracts?
- Ventral Corticospinal tract (VCST)
- lateral corticospinal tract (LCST)
What type of commands to the descending tracts carry?
Motor commands
What are the 2 ascending spinal tracts?
- Dorsal Column Medial Lemniscus tract (DCML)
- Ventral spinothalamic tract (VST)
What type of commands to the ascending tracts carry?
Sensory commands
What does decussate mean?
Switching sides
Where do AP’s get sent for motor commands?
M1
Where does LCST decussate?
Caudal medulla
What type of muscles does the LCST send input to?
Distal muscles in the extremities
What type of muscles does the VCST send input to?
proximal muscles (trunk and face)
What tract splits and innervates both the left and right side?
VCST
What type of inputs travel up the spinal cord along the medial lemniscus tract? Be specific.
Mechanosensory inputs
- cutaneous receptors
- muscle spindles
- GTOs
- joint receptors
Where does the DCML tract decussate?
Caudal medulla
What travels up the ventral spinothalamic tract?
Pain and temperature sensory inputs
Where does decussation occur for the VST?
the level at which it enters the spine
How are motor neurons arranged in the ventral horn?
Such that the ones which control distal muscles are located more laterally
