Neurodevelopmental disorders
ASD
Characterized by deficits in social communication and interaction, repetitive and stereotypical behaviors
A persistent deficit in social communication
B restricted, repetitive patterns
C Symptoms must be present in early developmental period
D Symptoms cause clinically significant impairment in social and occupational functioning
E These disturbances are not better explained by intellectual disability or global developmental delay
Examples of ASD like anecdotes from prof (2)
(a) guy at high school obsessed with details of NYC subways system
(b) teenage girl always at via railway system. Knows the whole timetable
ASD prevelence
Increasing
One in 59 kids have it in usa by 8 years old
Autistic traits are also seen in other psychiatric disorders: Major depressive, bipolar, schizophrenia
Levels of autism
Level 1 - require support
Sometimes can get on on themselves
Many profs level 1
Greta here
Level 2 - requires substantial support
Level 3 requires very substantial support
Autism is diagnosed via
The autistic spectrum screening questionnaire
Normal people watch eyes,
autistic people watch mouth
Much emotion is conveyed via the eyes
Autistic people can miss this
Autistic spectrum as a seperate personality dimension
Simon Baren-Cohen
Found autistic diagnosis is associated with lower E, and C and higher N on average
And argue the autism questionnaire is distinct from the big 5
Meta-analysis of big 5 traits in ASD
There were significant correlations for all big 5
All for the socially less desirable end
Strongest was for e (-.5)
and Emotional Stability (N) -3.59
This paper showed tis was true for those both whop has autism and were given the big 5 assessment
And for a comparison between groups, those with autism and those without.
Meta-Analysis of association between big 5 and common mental disorders
All studies were cross-sectional so we cannot say the big 5 preceded the illness
Included depressive disorders, Anxiety disorders and substance use disorders
Suggests big 5 could be predictive for higher risk
RESULTS
Generally speaking High N, Low C
Depression and anxiety, Low E
Substance use, Low A
Is big 5 enough to know someone?
No.
Need to also know what their life is like, what it was like in the past and what it might be like in the future. You need to know their desires, needs, wishes, goals, challenges and the unique way in which the person puts this all together and puts it into a narrative pattern to make sense of who they are
3 levels of personality
