LECTURE 1 connective tissue proper (connective tissue type) Flashcards
types of connective tissue proper (2) (arrangement of fibers)
loose CT, dense CT
functions of CT proper (4)
support and bind to other tissue, hold body fluids, defend against infection, stores nutrients as fat
loose connective tissue proper
areolar connective tissue; all 3 types of fibers present; cells: fibroblasts, WBC, macrophages, plasma cells; gelatinous ground substance, arrangement of cells and fibers slow invading microorganisms; eg: dermis, hypodermis, stoma of lungs, surrounds blood vessels and nerves
adipose tissue
(specialized loose CT proper) loaded with adipocytes; highly vascularized; high metabolic activity; functions: insulates, produces energy, supports; eg: hypodermis under skin
reticular connective tissue
(specialized loose CT proper) contains only reticular fibers; functions: forms caverns to hold free cells, forms internal “skeleton” of some organs; eg: bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen
dense/fibrous connective tissue proper
contains more collagen; can resist extremely strong pulling forces; regular vs. irregular
dense regular connective tissue proper
fibers run in same direction, parallel to pull; matrix hardly visible, nuclei less visible; very strong; eg: fascia, tendons, ligaments
dense irregular connective tissue proper
fibers thicker, run in different directions; can see more visible matrix, more visible nuclei; eg: dermis, fibrous capsules at ends of bones
