LECTURE 1 blood (connective tissue type) Flashcards
blood functions (3)
transports waste, gases, nutrients, hormones through cardiovascular system; helps regulate body temperature; protects body by fighting infection
qualities of blood
derived from mesenchyme, fluid matrix (plasma mostly made of water), no fibers
hematophoiesis
production of blood cells, occurs in bone marrow
formed elements of blood (3)
erythrocytes, leukocytes, platelets
erythrocytes
red blood cells, small oxygen transporting cells, most abundant in blood, no organelles, filled with hemoglobin, pick up oxygen at lungs and transport to rest of body
leukocytes
white blood cells, complete cells, fight against infectious disease, larger than RBC
platelets
thrombocytes (not cells), fragments of cytoplasm, plug small tears in vessel walls, initiates clotting, more present in blood than WBC but less present than RBC
