Lecture 1 Flashcards
motor learning and control is a multi-faceted discipline that encompasses
- Neuroanatomy
- Biomechanics
- Psychology
- Cognition and learning
movements can be from
simple to complex
motor control
the study of how movement is controlled ex) slowing down when someone is walking slow
what two things does motor control involve
- involves organization of the CNS: coordination of muscles and joints
- involves how sensory info is used: from our environment and body, separate and together
motor learning
the study of how movement is learned
-how movement is produced as a result of practice or experience
motor learning is a function of
- The task or movement to be learned
- The performer
- The environmental conditions of learning the task
motor performance
- motor learning takes place within the learner
- cannot be directly measured/observed
- learning is then inferred through performance
behavioral analysis
- based on concepts of cognitive info processing
- science of motor learning and performance
- theory and hypothesis
based on concepts of cognitive info processing
- understanding the variables that determine proficient performance
- variables that are important for learning
science of motor learning and performance
- active use of theory
- application of knowledge
theory and hypothesis
- test a theory and make predictions
- “if I ask learner to practice under condition X, then learning should be enhanced”
- typically 2 group of subjects are randomly assigned experimental treatments
- treatment (X) and a control group
- if X outperforms the control group, the hypothesis is supported (and the theory)
- if X does not outperform the control group? Look and see why
what is a seminal paper?
this type of paper describes a study that changes our understanding of a topic, or describes and illustrates a new and highly useful research method
-these kinds of articles are often referred to as seminal papers
