Lecture 1 Flashcards
Levels of organisation in the human body are?
- body
- system
- organ
- tissue
- cell
- organelle
- molecular/atomic
For each thing, need to know what?
Anatomy (structure:what, where) physiology (function:how)
What are the constituents of tissue?
Specialised cells embedded within ECM and ECM
What does the ECM consist of?
- water
- proteins
- proteoglycans
What are the 4 basic types of tissue?
- epithelial
- connective
- muscle
- nervous
What is the structure of epithelial tissue?
- layers/sheets of cells
- very little ECM
What is the function of epithelial tissue?
- covers/protects body surfaces
- lines cavities
What are examples of epithelial tissue?
- skin
- lining of tracts
- glands
What is the structure of connective tissue?
- sparse cells
- lots of ECM Containing fibres
What is the connective tissue function?
- supports structures
- transports substances
What are examples of connective tissue?
- bones
- cartilage/tendons
- fat
- blood
What is the structure of muscle tissue?
- long fibre like cells
- string fibres capable of pulling loads
What is the function of muscle tissue?
Produces movement and heat
What are examples of muscle tissue?
- skeletal
- smooth
- cardiac
What is the structure of nervous tissue?
- highly cellular of many types
- conducting and supporting
