Lecture 1 Flashcards
Baumeister, Twenge: Exclusion decreasing performance on intelligence test. 3 conditions: social connection (you will have lots of friends), social exclusion (you will not have lots of friends), accident prone (you will have many accidents - control)
Results: groups that received the second condition, social exclusion, performed worst on intelligence test –> social exclusion decreases cognitive performance
Manipulation of inclusion study: groups that held 15 min conversations about important issues in relationships. Students are then asked to choose partners they like and respect to collaborate with.
Two conditions: inclusion (everybody chose you), exclusion (nobody chose you)
Results: those from the exclusion condition gave higher scores for life being meaningless, and also showed increased aggression (by giving more noise blasts than those from inclusion condition.
