Lec 2 Radiology Flashcards

1
Q

What is benefit to MRI? Downsides?

A

no radiation; can see soft tissue in relation to bone

don’t use in pregnancy or metal in body; hard if you have phobia

Q

What is difference between the inner and outer layers of joint capsule?

A
outer = fibrous
inner = highly vascular, synovial membrane

Q

Where can you find synovium?

A

can cover tendons/ligaments

not on articular surfaces of meniscus

Q

Where does articular cartilage receive blood supply / nutrition?

A

avascular structure

receives nutrition from synovial fluid

8
Q

What is difference type A and type B synoviocytes?

A

type A = lots of lysosomes, vacuoles, less RER –> phagocytic function to clear debri

type B = few lysosomes, vacuoles; more RER –> synthesize synovial fluid

Q

What does synovial fluid normally look like?

A

clear to light yellow; can see through it to read print
does not clot
highly viscous

Q

What is boundary lubrication?

A

surfaces are slippery even w/ no visible fluid between them

b/c glycoprotein lubricating substance binds to articular cartilage to keep the surfaces separate

Q

What is weeping lubrication?

A

cartilage permeable and fulid soaked –> if you apply pressure it causes fluid to weep out toward surfaces

increasing load causes increased fluid weeping

Q

What is boosted lubrication?

A

cartilage surface is bumpy w/ peaks and valleys; when there is fast motion/pressure –> it comes out
