Lec 2 Radiology Flashcards
What is benefit to MRI? Downsides?
no radiation; can see soft tissue in relation to bone
don’t use in pregnancy or metal in body; hard if you have phobia
What is benefit to CAT scan?
you can see things that may not show up on plain film
What is the function of meniscus?
rotational stability = protective mech
What is difference between the inner and outer layers of joint capsule?
outer = fibrous inner = highly vascular, synovial membrane
Where can you find synovium?
can cover tendons/ligaments
not on articular surfaces of meniscus
Where does articular cartilage receive blood supply / nutrition?
avascular structure
receives nutrition from synovial fluid
Where are synoviocytes located?
coate the surface of synovium
What is difference type A and type B synoviocytes?
type A = lots of lysosomes, vacuoles, less RER –> phagocytic function to clear debri
type B = few lysosomes, vacuoles; more RER –> synthesize synovial fluid
What does synovial fluid normally look like?
clear to light yellow; can see through it to read print
does not clot
highly viscous
What is function of synovial fluid?
lubrication of joint surfaces
nutrition
What is boundary lubrication?
surfaces are slippery even w/ no visible fluid between them
b/c glycoprotein lubricating substance binds to articular cartilage to keep the surfaces separate
What is weeping lubrication?
cartilage permeable and fulid soaked –> if you apply pressure it causes fluid to weep out toward surfaces
increasing load causes increased fluid weeping
What is boosted lubrication?
cartilage surface is bumpy w/ peaks and valleys; when there is fast motion/pressure –> it comes out
What type of lubrication[s] good for low loads and low speeds?
boundary lubrication
What type of lubrication[s] good for high loads and high speeds?
weeping and boosted lubrication
