Lec 1 Intro Flashcards
What are the organic and inorganic components of bone?
organic = type 1 collagen inorganic = mineral [hydroxyapatite]
What is the shape of osteoblasts?
pear shaped cells; eccentric nuclei; basophilic cytoplasm
Where are osteoblasts located?
surfaces of bone trabeculae; haversian canals; between periosteum and cortex
What separates the osteoblasts from mineralized bone?
osteoid = seam of unmineralized bone
What does a transverse fracture suggest?
suggests that most likely there is bone pathology
What is arthritis?
inflammation of a joint
What is a commuted fracture?
fracture with more than 2 pieces of bone
What is aseptic necrosis of bone?
bone death by vascular insult
What is a diarthrosis joint?
synovial joint = easily moveable
What is order of most dense on xray: water, bone, air, fat?
air < fat < water < bone
What should you think if enlarged DIPs and PIPs but normal MCPs and wrists?
osteoarthritis
What should you think if DIPs normal, soft tissue swelling of PIPs and MCPs?
RA
What should you think if DIPs spared but swollen PIPs and MCPs with normal joint spaces?
SLE
[RA would have destruction of synovial joints]
What should you think if joints held fixed in felxion/contraction, shortened distal phalanges, and thick skin?
scleroderma
What should you think if normal MCPs, swelling of entire fingers, nail changes?
psoriatic arthritis
