Learning Factors Flashcards
What are the 7 learning factors?
Primacy
Exercise
Readiness
Relationship
Intensity
Effect
Recency
What is the definition of ‘readiness’ in the Flight Instructor Guide?
Ensure students are mentally, physically, and emotionally ready to learn.
Why?
Students lacking motivation or purpose will not learn effectively. Some things are beyond the instructor’s control. Like personal problems, worries, illness, fatigue, injuries.
How can you as instructor facilitate readiness in your student?
- Use an attention-getting opening
- State the goal or purpose of the lesson and why its important to know
- Relate it to familiar material or previous lessons
What is the ‘remembering curve’?
Once learned, dont just leave the subject forever. Constant and consistent review of the material is essential.
Students will start to forget stuff in the first 24 to 48 hours after learning the material.
Sudies show that with no review:
* 2 days - less than 70% retained
* 30 days - only 40% retained
How do we retain information better to beat the remembering curve?
What is the learning factor exercise?
Learning and skill developement require repetition and practice. It is important to keep skills sharp by continually working on them
How do we facilitate exercise?
- Question the student using how and why statements
- Once the student knows the facts, have them relate - not just repeat - them back to you. Get them to explaine the why.
- Challenge a student at the level they are on
- Frequently test a student’s knowledge and abilities, re-teaching weak areas
- Ensure that solo practice has a specific goal

What is ‘primacy’?
- Teach it right the first time
- First impressions are unshakable
- Students may imitate your errors
How do we facilitate primacy as the instructor?
- Be prepared
- Rehearse your lessons
- Hone your skills ahead of time
- Familiarize yourself with possible questions
What does ‘relationship’ mean in the 7 learning factors?
How students relate new information to everything else they have learned. Present lessons in the logical sequence of known to unknow, simple to complex.
Relate lesson to previous skills
What is ‘intensity’?
Refers to your intensity as the instructor. A monotonous talker who isnt excited about anything they are teaching will not be all that memorable to the student after and less learning will take place.
Be enthusiastic and sincere towards the topic. Use a variety of training aids, develop realistic scenarios or actual experiences
What is ‘Recency’?
The last things in a lesson that a student learns are usually remembered the longest.
Summarize and practice the important points at the end of each lesson
Pre-flight to review last flight and prepare for this one. Review main points by questioning. Summarize those points again at the end of the lesson.
What is ‘effect’?
You want each lesson to have a positive effect. Feelings of defeat, frustration, or anger impede the learning process.
Ensure students gain a feeling of satisfaction from having taken part in the lesson.
How do you facilitate ‘effect’ as an instructor?
In a post flight briefing, point out the positives of the flight first.
Areas to improve next along with how to accomplish this
Each lesson does not have to be mastered the first time, but a feeling of accomplishment towards the goal should be felt.
Observe your student carefully for signs of understanding or confusion. Show students how to improve and offer praise when they do.
