A significant lifelong difficulty in learning and understanding, a significant difficulty in learning and processing the skills needed to cope with everyday life, with evidence that these difficulties started before 18 years of age.
Some causes?
pre-natal, peri-natal, alcohol, accidents, genetic disorders, downs syndrome.
What is autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorders are also known by other names including Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Childhood Autism.
What autism isn’t?
Autism is not a mental health condition but people with autism may develop such conditions as the rest of the population.
what are sensory references?
These are like objects of reference but use sound, sight, smell and taste as a means of orientation rather than a specific object.
What are VOCA?
These are pieces of equipment that use speech that has been electronically stored. They can range from simple devices, a button with one message or word.
What is makaton?
Makaton is an approach to teaching communication, language and literacy using combined modes of communication.
What are talking mats?
A talking mat is a low-tech communication framework designed to assist people with communication difficulties to express feelings, choice or arrive at a decision.
What are PECS?
PECS is a picture-symbol-based approach which emphasises the transactional nature of communication.
What are hospital passports?
A communication or hospital passport is a simple and practical guide to understanding and supporting a person’s communication.
What do hospital passports include?
It is a book using words and pictures to describe a person in a positive way.
It should contain the key information the owner would want to tell when introduced to a new person, for example, likes and dislikes.
What are visual timetables?
A visual timetable/planner uses photos, pictures, symbols or objects placed in a sequence to represent daily activities.
What are talk about books?
A talk about book is a book of photos and paper reminders to record events and achievements, activities or things that are of interest to its owner.
What are social stories?
A social story is a short story written in a specific style and format. The story describes what happens in a specific social situation, that may be obvious to use but not people with impaired social understanding.
What are functions of challenging behaviour?
Pain, social attention/interaction, self-stimulation, avoidance, access to tangibles.
