what is leadership?
leadership is the process through which one member of a group that is its leader, influences other group members towards attainment of shared group goals
what are the positve leadership styles?
participative - invites his surbordinates to share in the decision-making process integrating their suggestions into his final decision as to how the group/org. shall proceed.
transactional - uses reward and correctional action to direct the group. highly effective as they boost morale and productivity where the work being performed or the goal being sought is inspiring.
transformative - he is viewed as charasmatic, admired, trusted. he inspires his followers and challenge their work
the quiet leader - brings out the best in ppl. improve the thinking of others without telling them what to do. makes permanent workplace performance changes => higher prodcutivity, new levels of morale and greater job satisfaction.
task leader goal oriented using standards, organises work and focuses his attention on company goals.
social leader - group oriented, excellent at mediating conflicts and building high-achieving teams. delegates authority and welcomes participation of team members.
situational leader - this leader has directive and supportive behaviours. directive behaviours clearly telling ppl what to do then monitoring their performance. supportive behaviours involves listening to ppl and providing support and encouragement for their efforts
what are the negatove leadership styles ?
post hoc - found in small businesses with few formal systems and a general autocratic style and large businesses where results trumps rules. right and blame free
micromanagement- contols every aspect of work to be done. views surbordinate as incompetent and surbordinates are frustration under this type of leadership.
seagull management - flies in poops on you then flies away. talks down to surbordinates and discourages them from having input in discussions. verbal abuses surbordinates making them feel under valued.
kipper management - two faced. model employee inn front of senior management but in front of subordinates they are the opposite.
what are the characteristics of an effective leader?

- good communicators - is necessary for internal and external communication must be able to explain a decision or action in order to gain support.

what are the four quadrants of leadership?
- directing style - high directive and low supporting behaviours - provides specific direction and closely monitor task accomplishment
- coaching style - high directives and high supportive behaviour - directs and closely monitor accomplishments but also explain decisions, solicits suggestions and support progress
- supporting style - high supportive and low directive behaviour - facilitates and supports persons efforts towards tasks and share responsibility for decision making with them.
- delegating style - low supportive and low directive behaviour - turns over responsibility for decision making and problem solving to the ppl.
