what is gender?
it is the attitudes, feelings and behaviours that a given culture associates with a person’s biological sex. it is learned through socialisation.
what is sex?
sex refers to whether you are a male or a female.
what is gender stereotyping?
is the overgeneralization of characteristics, differences and attributes of a certain group based on their gender. for eg. whilst assertive women are bitches and men who are nnot masculine are wimps
what are the 3 main issues that mainly women face in the workplace?
gender bias refers to the unequal treatment in employment opportunity and expectations based on sex or group of employees.
sexual harassment - an unwelcomed sexual advances or other conduct that makes a person uncomfortable and interferes with his or her work.
diversity in the workplace - refers to the acceptance of person sexual preferenece in the workplace.
what are the aspects of gender bias?
- gender blindness - refers to when a person chooses not to see the differences between genders. harmful > further gender inequalities.
- gender awareness - the opposite of gender blindness. it means that persons are attuned to the differences, expectations and needs of ppl of different genders.
- gender sensitivity - the process by which ppl are made aware of how gender plays a role in life through their treatment of others.
- gender analysis - the variety of methods used to understand the relationship s b/n men and women, their access to resources , their activities and the constraints they face relative to each other.
- gender mainstreaming - an approach to policy which takes into account both men and women interests and concerns. it integrates gender equality perspective at all stages and level of policies, programs and projects.
what are the view of men via gender mainstreaming?
- Traditional - less willing to accept women in the police service.
- Moderns - welcome the introduction of women into the workplace as they realize that police work requires a variety of ppl with different skills.
- Moderates - acceptance of women into police work but feel that women should not be allowed to engage to certain duties like patrols.
how may sexual harrasment affect persons in the workplace?
- emotional trauma
- compromised work
production - absenteeism from the job
- deterioration in morale
- long-term depression
- negative impact on work
and private life.
