Layer C, Task 7 Flashcards
Central nervous system
Brain + spinal cord
Nervous system
Organ system made up of brain, spinal cord & peripheral nerves
Peripheral nervous system
Carries signals between body + CNS
3 types of peripheral nerves
- Voluntary (somatic)
- Involuntary (autonomic)
- Sensory (afferent)
How is the central nervous system protected?
By bones (skull, spine, cerebrospinal fluid)
What is nerve tissue made of?
Nerve cells
Nerve cells
Communication specialists that conduct electrical signals (nerve impulses) throughout body
Myelin sheath
Insulation, prevents electrical impulses from passing to wrong neuron
Nerves
Bundles of neurons surrounded by connective tissue
Sensory receptors
Special cells/tissues that receive input from external environment and send signals to CNS
Sensory organs
Eyes, ears, mouth, nose, skin, muscles
