Layer C, Task 3 Flashcards
Mitosis
Type of cell division done by most body cells that help organisms
- Grow in size
- Repair damaged tissue
Why shouldn’t cells divide all the time?
Leads to cancer (uncontrolled cell growth)
What phase is the longest part of the cell cycle?
Interphase
Interphase
Cell grows, replicates its DNA and carries out daily cell functions
3 stages of interphase
G1 - cell growth
S - DNA synthesis (replication of DNA)
G2 - cell growth
What part of a cell contains DNA?
Nucleus, where DNA is organized into chromosomes
Chromosomes are duplicated in interphase but the chromosome number remains the same. Why?
Chromosomes are counted by the number of centromeres, which is where the 2 sister chromatids are attached
Mitosis stages of division
- Prophase
- Metaphase
- Anaphase
- Telophase
Prophase
Chromosomes in the nucleus are condensing (thickening and visible)
Metaphase
Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell, nucleus disassembled
Anaphase
Chromosomes move to opposite sides (poles) of cell (spindles help move the chromosomes)
Telophase
New nuclei are forming on each side to make 2 new cells
Cytokinesis
Splits the cytoplasm
Asexual reproduction
Producing offspring from only 1 parent
Offspring genetically identical to parent
Sexual reproduction
Producing offspring by the fusion of 2 gametes (parental cells that contain only half the DNA usually found in a cell)
Offspring has genetic info from each parent
